Fatuaria is a trullo, cummerse and lamia masseria situated in the heart of the Valle d’Itria, in the countryside of Ostuni, originally built around the ‘800s; when hence the property was home to farmers and their donkeys. Many of the suites on offer today, were originally used for storing grain or hay for the animals.
The masseria, built upon terraces purposefully shaped many years ago to hold the earth upon the hillside; occupies a prominent position in which to survey the purveying countryside. The sun terraces are populated with a variety of trees including the great olive trees and a number of fruit and almond trees. The property is ringed by a vegetable garden from which the masseria uses to provide local dishes and produce for its guests in the restaurant. Honey production is prolific, with the help of flowering mint plants and assorted flowering plants.
The owners, Giuseppe and Giulia, have restored the masseria with a dash of eccentricity and delightful quirkiness; not to mention an obsessive attention to the smallest of details; the outcome being an exclusive boutique hotel with six individual suites and junior suites.
The masseria’s common areas and suites are furnished with design pieces, contemporary art combined with original objects used by the farmers that were recovered during the restoration process. Every comfort has been catered for, providing spacious private gardens for each suite, deliberately excluding televisions! from the bedrooms to promote a tranquil and gratifying stay for all guests.
Authenticity, tradition, stone faced walls and paving made by hand; dobbed with unique pieces of furniture and furnishings in the main communal hall ensures compelling surroundings in which to relax, chatter and meander into vacation mode.
The swimming pool is nestled in the ‘jazzo’, the original sheep pen, between high stone walls. The salt water pool is a stunning somber black, integrated in to the dark green lawns that flank its borders.
What’s more, the Masseria Fatuaria boasts its own restaurant, in the carob orchard where breakfast and dinner are served in the high season. The natural surroundings have hosted a number of weddings and private parties. Fatuaria cooking is simple in the traditional Pugliese way, vegetables straight from the garden. Served with selected wines from the region.
In addition to weddings and parties, the masseria plays host to music festivals, poetry sittings, art shows, and a number of other animations from the local area in the Fatuaria Arena. The ‘aia; old threshing mound.
